About the Event
From Away has been created with the desire to share my non-traditional journey to acceptance of both who and where I am as a singer and artist. It is about letting go of “shoulds” and “what could’ve beens” and embracing the here and now with dignity.
The program consists of arias and art songs by Duke, Price, Strauss, Liszt, Mozart and Dove. In it, I revisit repertoire from my very beginnings as a singer filled with nostalgia, and add repertoire that is new and exciting to me. The only requirement in my programming was that the music and text touched my soul in some way, with the goal that it will in turn touch yours.
If you too, have “square peg in a round hole” sentiments or the desire to support them, I invite you to join Scott Wheatley and I in this heartfelt event. Thank you for your interest!
About the artists:
Scott Wheatley, piano: Baritone Scott Wheatley, a native of Kansas, holds degrees from the University of Missouri/Kansas City Conservatory of Music and the University of South Florida. He has performed with the Kansas City Lyric Opera, New York City Opera, Whitewater Opera, Bronx Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Northeast, Connecticut Grand Opera, and the Ashlawn Summer Festival companies as well as the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony.
Currently, Scott is on faculty at University of Southern Maine. He serves as Music Director at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland and is the Assistant Music Director for the Oratorio Chorale. In addition to a busy singing and teaching schedule, Scott enjoys an active career as a coach/accompanist collaborating with both singers and instrumentalists.
Shaunna Lucas, soprano: Shaunna has recently appeared with City Theater as Signora Nacarelli in their production of The Light in the Piazza. Prior to that she performed the role of Donna Elvira in Greater Worcester Opera’s production of Don Giovanni (her favorite role thus far!). Other notable performances include Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus and Antonia in The Tales of Hoffman. Shaunna was classically trained at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music. After a long hiatus, she returned to the stage in 2016. Shaunna lives in Portland, Maine and was a regular performer with the Portland Rossini Club. She currently studies with Dana Lynne Varga in Boston. She is the Co-Founder and a featured singer of Opera on Tap Maine, a program designed to bring opera to the community.
