Time & Location
About the Event
Heather Gallagher, Tom Oesterling, James Myers and Yukiko Oba perform Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde
"With one stroke, I have lost everything I have gained in terms of who I thought I was, and have to learn my first steps again like a newborn". -Gustav Mahler
The summer of 1907 was not kind to Gustav Mahler. A number of personal tragedies befell him- his resignation from the Vienna opera due to rampant antisemitism, the death of his daughter Maria and the discovery that he himself was dying from a congenital heart defect. In this time of mortality, he discovered a German translation of ancient Chinese poetry by Hans Bethge. Inspired by the poetry's beauty and timely rendering of human mortality and loss, he began the composition of what would come to be known as Das Lied von der Erde.
More than a century later, Mahler's work continues to be relevant. While the world is ravaged by chaos, conflict, death and isolation we reflect on our past, our future and our shared humanity. We present our own pared down version of this symphonic classic with Mezzo-soprano, Heather Gallagher, Tenor, Tom Oesterling and pianists James Myers and Yukiko Oba.
A short lecture by dramaturge Peter Schiepers will open the program. A brief Q&A with the artists will follow.
